THE ROLE
The Spiritual Health Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a continuum of spiritual health services consistent with the Providence Mission, Values, Vision, and Promise. This role ensures that the strategic plan for Spiritual Care Departments and programs in their region/service line incorporates Providence strategic goals and initiatives with a focus on customer service, quality improvement, coordination of care, analysis of data, and program development to effectively provide excellent spiritual care in a manner consistent with the needs of their particular region/service line. The Spiritual Health Officer is a board-certified chaplain with a comprehensive understanding of leadership and patient care principles. As a member of the system and local leadership team, this role assists in the development of effective operational strategies for patient care services as well as support to caregivers and collaboration with faith/spiritual communities within their region/service line by working collaboratively within the facilities/sites, across service lines and departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Directs the Spiritual Health Services Program for the region/service line and multiple locations. Responsible for various ministry sites or service lines, over a large geographical area, and at least one manager direct report
- Facilitates team building, theological reflection, and on-going professional development.
- Contributes to the body of research, publications, and case studies (offered by Providence Spiritual Health Services). Promotes how research literature informs the profession of chaplaincy and one’s spiritual care practice and support research projects as needed.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with local leadership of diverse faith traditions. Establishes and maintains relationships with local leadership of diverse faith traditions.
- Collaborates with local Mission Integration leaders to develop opportunities for personal spiritual growth, spiritual counseling, continuing formation, and retreats (for caregivers, providers, physicians, volunteers, patients, and family as appropriate)
- Reviews regional/service line Spiritual Health Services services/programs annually to ensure that objectives and goals are being met and to make recommendations for improvements/changes.
- In alignment with the system spiritual health plan created with the system executive leader in spiritual health and in partnership with the mission executive in the division, develops goals and objectives in collaboration with mission and spiritual health leaders for the division/region, oversees the implementation of a spiritual health strategic plan, and evaluates progress toward the goals periodically throughout the year.
- Designs a structure for delivery of spiritual health services that is responsive to the needs of each ministry, including patients, residents, participants, families and staff
- Develops an annual budget for Spiritual Health leadership division/regions and works closely in the budget planning process for the local ministries and locations.
- Maintains CPE programs, in coordination with CPE educators, that will cultivate quality spiritual care providers that can be hired into our ministries as needed, assuring a path to address future employment needs while maximizing spiritual health resources and being good financial stewards.
- Provides thought leadership on local Ethics Committee and in ethics consults, advocating for the Ethical and Religious Directives.
- Provides a measurable quality of Spiritual Health Services that is evidence-based, outcome-oriented, and consistent with national best practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, or Spirituality from an appropriately accredited college or university.
- 4 units—Accredited or approved by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), by programs that were accredited by the former United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation (USCCB/CCA), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC/ACSS). Equivalency for one unit of CPE (two units in CASC) may be considered
- Advanced training in ethical, religious, and spiritual dimensions of loss, illness, and bereavement (preferred)
- Upon hire: National Chaplain Certification (Vendor Managed)
- 10 or more years of experience as a chaplain
- 10 or more years of progressive responsibility for leadership functions, including 8-10 years of direct people leadership
- 10 or more years of experience in health care setting
- Practicing Catholic preferred in the Catholic -based ministries/locations.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to:
- Minister effectively in highly-stressful situation
- Communicate effectively in both verbal and written interactions
- Facilitate conferences between parties who are in disagreement
- Provide spiritual care and counsel that respects diversity and differences including, but not limited to culture, gender, and sexual orientation and spiritual/religious practices
- Collaborate with leaders both internal and external to the organization
- Strong sense of pastoral identity and a commitment to act with integrity
- Clear understanding of the ethical, spiritual and legal issues that routinely arise in the practice of medicine
- Familiar with the Common Code of Ethics as affirmed by the council on Collaboration. Adherence to the code of ethics of one’s certifying agency and one’s own spiritual tradition
- Catholic context: Familiar with the practices and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and able to incorporate knowledge of these traditions and practices into the leadership of the department.

Pay Range: $66.50 - $114.31
The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
